I am a US Marine veteran. I loved surfing, climbing mountains, camping with my kids, and hiking. That all changed when I lost my right leg in Afghanistan, I struggled to regain my independence and relied on friends and family to drive me around. I felt I would never be able to do the things I loved.
I thought that my passion for surfing was gone forever. I was stuck at home, watching others catch the waves on tv and videos on Youtube feeling like I had lost a part of myself. I struggled to do the things I once loved, like camping with my kids. It was a painful realization that I could no longer provide the adventures for my children that I used to, but I never lost hope.
While in therapy, my therapist encouraged me to try surfing again. I was initially skeptical, but I decided to try it. I was amazed at how much I was able to do. I could balance on my board, catch waves, and even stand up. I was excited as I paddled to the lineup and saw my first wave. It was a feeling like no other.
The biggest challenge was finding someone to take me to the beach and wait on me while I played in the waves. I could not go whenever I wanted or my schedule allowed me to.
Then one day, my family surprised me with a gift. It was an AMM Left Foot Accelerator Pedal. At first, I was hesitant to try it, but I was curious to see how it would change my life. As soon as I installed it, I was amazed at its easy use. The all-metal structure was sturdy and steady, giving me the confidence to drive again.
With this left-foot gas pedal, I regained my independence to enjoy the freedom of the open road. I could finally go on outdoor and travel adventures without relying on anyone else. It was amazing to have the ability to drive myself and enjoy the simple things in life again. I continued to practice every chance I got. I also started to modify my surfboard to make it easier for me to balance. I added a unique strap to hold my prosthetic in place. I was determined to surf like I used to again, and nothing was going to stop me.
I finally even entered my first small local surfing competition, and I was nervous. I had been practicing for months, but I was still determining if I was ready. I did my best, and I was proud of myself. I was amazed at the support I received from the surfing community. They cheered me on, and I felt like I was part of something special.
I was finally able to do what I loved again. Surfing became a way for me to show others that anything is possible. I may not have my leg, but I regained purpose in life. I learned never to give up and always to keep pushing myself.
Being able to drive me on my own and surf again gave me a sense of freedom I never thought possible. I was able to forget about my injury and just enjoy the moment. I am grateful for the opportunity to surf again, and I hope to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. Life may be different now, but it is still full of adventure and possibilities.
The kids and I recently packed up the car and headed to the great outdoors of the Appalachian Mountains. We went hiking and fishing and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Most importantly, I was finally able to take my kids camping again. It was an unforgettable experience, and I was able to provide my children with memories that will last a lifetime.
I am forever grateful for the AMM Left Foot Accelerator Pedal. I am forever thankful for this product and its impact on my life. It has given me back my independence and the ability to live life to the fullest. It has allowed me to be the father my kids deserve and give them the adventures they deserve. Thank you, AMM Able Motion Mobility, for giving me a second chance to live a fulfilling life.
